Saving life

Hackathon team project, 2022

Background

“Michal Sela Forum” was founded following the brutally murder of Michal Sela by her husband. Their goal is to save the next murder victim through creative thinking and the use of advanced technologies in time of crisis as well as in prevention and raising awareness to warning signals. As part of this goal, they founded The Michal Sela Hackathon, Safa@Home, to develop startups to save lives and prevent domestic violence against women.

The Problem

Today, approximately 30% of women in Israel experience domestic violence and the number just keep rising.

Many of those women are at risk of getting murdered by their spouse, family member, etc.

Those women usually wont complain and involve the authorities because of the fear from their abuse.

Only after they are murdered, we found out that the “writing was on the wall”, meaning that people around the victim saw signs of domestic violence but not the hole picture, so they decided not to do somthing about it.

Goals

1. Build a platform that will link the pieces of information from people around the victim, so the authorities will have a clear information that the victim experience domestic violence.

2. Build a platform that will help the authorities track this information so they could help women in danger before it’s too late.

3. Overall- reduce domestic violence in society in Israel.

Possible Solution

1. Sharing information platform- responsive platform from which people can report about possible domestic violence they seen or women who may be a potential victim to abuse.

2. RMS system for managing relationship abuse reports- Records Management system under the control of the police, that will manage all the reports and help potential victims if necessary

Research

User Reseach

Due to the nature of the project, I decided to focus the research on the close environment of the victim using a survey and personal interviews.

What did I find?

How do people report today?

What are my insights?

People are aware to domestic violence happening in their community.

People are willing to help and stop domestic violence by reporting anonymously about it.

Many people are not reporting about domestic violence because they are afraid of the consequences and what can happen to them or the victim if they do.

Competitive Analysis

Apps for domestic violence

image 1.png

Pros

The victim can notify a group of close people if she feel unsafe

can record and podcast

Cons

The app not connected to databases of the police

Relay only on the people around the victim

The responsibility to act is mainly by the victim

Pros

Creates a connection to a database containing the details of those who received the device

Used by police forces

Cons

The device can only be obtained through the police

Only for violence cases already known to the police

The responsibility to act is mainly by the victim

Pros

Intended for documenting all types of violence

Allows preserving evidence

Cons

Not intended for specific partner violence

Cost money to use

Ignore cases where the victim is afraid to come forward and complain

Isn’t connected to the police forces- the responsibility to act is the victim’s only

Pros

Web based app

Feature of adding DNA samples of the offender and the victim

Cons

The information reaches the police only if something happens to the victim (for example, if she disappears)

The responsibility to act is mainly by the victim

Pros

Feature of taking a video of the violent incident and send it directly and quickly to the police forces

The victim can record incidents in a diary

Cons

The app requires to open a police file before using it- the victim needs to enter the police department and file number on registration

Ignore cases where the victim is afraid to come forward and complain

Conclusions

The reports might arrive to the police when it’s already too late

The apps that exist today and connected to the police, transfer information about cases of domestic violence that are already known to the police or only after something happens to the victim that she can’t come forward herself.

The responsibility to act and report is mainly by the victim

All of the apps above ignore cases where the victim is afraid to come forward and complain to the authorities or her close environment.

Based on these conclusions, I decided to create an application that includes filling out a short form to report a case of violence against women, which people close to that woman can fill out and the form will quickly go into the system under the responsibility of the authorities.

User Flow

The reporting scenario in the app connects to the RMS system and activates the treatment process scenario of the authorities. In order to show the connection between the different scenarios I’ve created the following user flow.
